Response: “ The Laborers Who Keep Dick Pics And Beheadings Out Of Your Facebook” by Adrian Chen
Area 1:
In the article “The Laborers Who Keep Dick Pics And Beheadings Out Of Your Facebook” by Adrian Chen mentions the grandma problem on the internet in others words making a lot safer for them to see. Why would any one would post something they would not want their grandmother to see. Some people’s are jobs are exactly that removing offensive material such as dic pics. And creating apps to remove these unwanted pics. However, these people are under strict guidelines of what is to be removed. They go through post in real time and removing as fast as they can. Baybayan and other employees have to make a distinction between erotic posts or harmless hookup request. He states it’s all about the context. They hold the power to delete it forever. That is the lighter side of removing explicit content. Jake Swearington wasn’t not as lucky he witness a beheading and quit because he didn’t want to see these horrible things happening to them. And the amount money is difficult to pass up on. YouTube moderator Rob learned quickly how “effed”up the world truly is. And he could not separate the distinctions between the viewer and reality.
Area 2:
The people who have to moderate these horrible videos there is no amount of money can surpass the mental toll it has on a person. I think the people who do this are brave. Anything that has to do with animal or human cruelty i will not stand for. This reminds me of the documentary of “don’t fuck with cats” a man post a video of himself torturing kittens and goes viral. And there is this group that tries to stop him and try to find out who he is because they want justice for these kittens. And he escalated to killing a man because he wanted attention and he got it. It is cliche to say the idea of viewing a video of a child, human or animal experiencing cruelty is sickening. It becomes personal to the viewer. I am imagining this as family member or someone close to me. Because how can anyone do this to any human being and post online for others to see. And the moderators witness on daily basis and some become numb or force to quit. I think these people who are in this line work deserve way more credit.
